  • What is the story behind the hostel Surfing Turtle Lounge?

I was looking for something to invest in, and was offered this site. It was deserted and without power, but I explored it, and developed ideas. Only after having bought the site and build the project had started, I found turtles that came to this beach to lay eggs. At the same time I discovered how the locals gathered and sold them illegally. Then I thought, “What can I do with this”.

  • What did you do?

I could not ask them to stop. I’m one person, and this was my new neighbor. In addition, this talk about poor people and gleaning their livelihood. So what I did was I sat down with the locals to try to reach a solution. We came to an agreement, and that the situation is today I buy eggs from them for market.

  • What do you do with the eggs?

They put in hatcheries, here is the safe until they hatch. However, it is important to handle eggs properly so they are not damaged. These volunteers biology students from the University of León voluntarily instructed our volunteers and staff workers in.

  • How do you fund this?

turtle We arrange tours that cost five dollars. This money is used to buy eggs. In addition, we find eggs on these trips that go straight into hatcheries. Unfortunately we do not get enough money to buy all, we buy the ones we can afford.

  • Why was it important to do something about the turtles’ situation, then you basically should run hostel?

I can say it as simply as I love turtles. But in addition, the turtles was an important symbol for both Maya – and Aztekerindianerne. The turtles have lived here very long time, and in recent years we have seen how people are trying to exterminate them. For me it is important that we make an effort so this does not happen.

  • How do prospects look?

goal is that more people will know about the project so that it could be bigger, and that together we can save more turtles.
